The Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) was established in 1976 by the Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA). ICSA itself was established by the government of the old Northern Region of Nigeria to provide educational and social services to the people of the region. The first Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) was held in 1977 for all students who had undergone the IJMBE post-secondary education programme in the existing schools of Basic/ Preliminary studies which had replaced the HSCE. Presently IJMB now serves as an Advanced Level Examination which guarantees students admission into 200 level.


The Board is administered by the Institute of Basic Education of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. Other members of the board include representatives of various Examination & Educational bodies such as Joint Admission Matriculation Board; Federal University of Technology, Minna, etc.

The programme is open to all interested candidates nationwide and any course can be offered be it Science, Art, or Social Science. The basic requirements are as follows:

  • O'Level Result (Max of 2 sittings)
  • Four (4) Passport Photographs
  • Birth Certificate
  • Certificate of State of origin (Optional)

However, note that;

  • No JAMB/PUTME score is needed for Admission
  • Awaiting Result Candidate too can Apply
  • Automatic Admission without Screening

With the right combinations of A/Level subjects, students will be able to pursue their degree programmes in their chosen universities.

A/L Programme:

Students on this programme are required to register and sit for three (3) A/L subjects (English language compulsory) identified with their preferred course of study in the university be it Science, Art, or Social Science Course. Candidates would then be lectured on these subjects for a time period of nine (9) months at their particular chosen IJMB Study Centre and thereafter sit for the examination. These subjects are to be chosen from the list provided below, and relevant to the undergraduate programmes they wish to go for in the universities. Candidates may need to consult the brochure for necessary guidance regarding subjects that are relevant to your proposed degree programme. O/L Programme:

The Ordinary Level examination is meant to remedy deficiencies in English Language and Mathematics at the same level in the WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or Cambridge (CIE) results. As students having deficiencies in O/Level English Language and Mathematics in their WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB examinations can sit for these subjects. Such students are not necessarily A/L students. You can register for one or both O/Level subjects, depending on the number of deficiencies. These subjects are to be chosen from the list provided below;

WHAT IS JUPEB:

It is of the acronym Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board, It has coordinating body in various tertiary institutions and different affiliated study centers nationwide. The programme is specifically designed to provide an opportunity for candidates who cannot gain admission to regular degree programmes in Nigerian Universities for one reason or the other, as the programme only requires candidates Olevel results, also awaiting result candidates can Enrol.


  • Approved: By the Federal Government has a platform for securing admission into higher institution in the country and abroad.
  • Proven: Yearly, about 20,000 applicants put in for the programme in which more than 70% fraction successfully secure admission with it into 200 level to their preferred institution & course of study.
  • Certified: By Nigeria University Commission (NUC) has an Advanced level examination that qualify students into 200level via Direct Entry.

HOW JUPEB WORKS:

Prospective JUPEB candidates are required to select any THREE (3) A/L JUPEB Subject Combination identified with their preferred course of study in the university be it Science, Art or Social Science Course. Candidates would then be lectured for the stipulated period at their respective Study Centre and thereafter sit for the final examination. On completion of the programme, successful candidates accordingly utilize their JUPEB certificate to secure admission into 200level in any Nigeria tertiary institution via Direct Entry and some foreign universities. Admission is based strictly on merit and entry requirement is proportion to the admission quota of the University for the various Faculties.
